Teaching Background
I have been teaching at the university level since 2001. Previously I taught at Binghamton University (SUNY), in both the Harpur College of Arts & Sciences and the Watson School of Engineering, Ithaca College, SUNY Cortland, and Empire State College. I am Associate Professor of English at Lamar University. My academic training is in Comparative Literature and Philosophy so I have taught a wide range of courses. In my current position, I often teach courses in ancient and modern world literature, British literature, Asian literature, mythology, composition and rhetoric, and graduate professional development. I have designed and taught several online courses, as well as face-to-face honors, graduate, and general education courses.
I am deeply committed to scholarly teaching and to an active and collaborative approach to learning. In the last few years, I have become active in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, obtaining an external grant to study the effects of a course redesign on student learning and persistence in a large, open-enrollment general education Philosophy course. In addition to serving as Associate Professor of English, I serve as Director of the Center for Teaching & Learning Enhancement, our Faculty Development center at Lamar University. Previously, I was Associate Director of the ACES project, a faculty fellowship program that promotes Active and Collaborative Engagement for Students and Associate Director of a faculty development program for new faculty, Support & Mentoring to Advance Research & Teaching (SMART).
